Society
of the Honor Guard Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Scholarship Information
|

Through the generosity of members within the Society and proceeds from our
Society Store, we now have funding available to provide one, perhaps two
scholarships on an annual basis.
The purpose of the Scholarship Program is to provide financial assistance
to members of the Society, or to their dependents that wish to pursue an
undergraduate degree, associate degree, or vocational training.
Qualifications and Guidelines for Candidates for Scholarship:
- A candidate must be a member of The
Society of the Honor Guard, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (SHGTUS) or a
dependent of a member of the SHGTUS or a dependent of a deceased Tomb
Guard who expired before the establishment of the SHGTUS. Preference will
be given to dependents of deceased members and to the dependents of those
Society members who were incapacitated or killed while serving on active
duty. A SHGTUS Member, who separated from the Army and is subsequently
incapacitated, will receive special consideration. Selection of the
recipient (s) will be determined on the merit of each applicant’s
petition.
- The recipient must enroll at an accredited college,
university, community college, junior college, business college, nursing
school, vocational school or another course of instruction approved by the
Scholarship Committee.
- The length of the scholarship shall be one year. The
student may reapply annually provided they maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA each
term and be enrolled as a full time student as defined by the institution.
The scholarship will be payable at the beginning of the enrollment period.
The recipient and educational institution must provide verification, in
writing, to the Chair of the Scholarship Committee that the recipient is
in good standing. Circumstances, such as major illness, or severe hardship
incurred by the recipient may be used to appeal to the Scholarship
Committee for reapplication.
- Application for a SHGTUS scholarship will be submitted
by the applicant and sent to the Chairperson, by mail or e-mail. The
applicant must identify the SHGTUS member as the sponsor, so that the
Scholarship Committee makes verification. Applicant must specify course
requirements, etc., as set forth by the institution (s) that he/she is
qualified to attend. Applicant must compose a 1-2 page essay (maximum)
stating his/her goals and how a SHGTUS Scholarship could help to attain
these goals. Applicant must include all other applicants for scholarships
and existing scholarships.
- Race, color, gender, religious belief or national
origin will not influence the selection of candidates.
