IMMEDIATE ACTION
March 24, 1926.
SUBJECT: Establishment of an armed guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery.
TO: The Commanding General District of
Washington, Washington, D. C.
1.
The Commanding General, District of Washington, will take necessary
action for the establishment, effective March 25, 1926, of a military guard,
armed with a rifle, at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery.
2.
One sentinel will be posted at the tomb from the hour of the opening of
the gates to the cemetery each morning until the closing of the gates each
evening.
3.
In this connection, attention is invited to the fact that the
Quartermaster Department now maintains a watchman at the tomb whose special duty
is to prevent any desecration or disrespect.

Subject: Guard at Tomb of Unknown Soldier.
TO: Commanding Officer, Fort Myer, Virginia.
Effective this date a sentinel will be posted at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at all times. Also, effective this date the strength of the guard for the Tomb is increased from two (2) non-commissioned officers and six (6) privates to three (3) non-commissioned officers and nine (9) privates.
